Dates added to Barry Lee’s ‘How Nice’

Plus: Notch8’s largest group exhibition and Fixate highlights more than 60 artists

If you missed your chance to see Barry Lee’s latest exhibition, How Nice, last week, don’t fret. Three dates have been added to view the exhibition in which Lee explores his experiences navigating an ableist world as a bisexual man with a disability through photography and video. Notch8 Gallery has organized its largest group exhibition to date. Out of Context will feature more than a dozen local artists, many of whom will attend the opening reception of the exhibition. Notch8 is an “alternative art space” owned and operated by Miya Bailey and Sharon Dennehy. The opening reception of Out of Context will feature sounds by Dee Belevedere. Free. RAW Atlanta is an independent arts organization for artists and by artists working to provide a platform for artists across the world to be “seen, heard and loved.” Its next event, Fixate, will include the work of more than 60 local artists working in various mediums, including performance art, hair and makeup, visual art and film. To introduce folks of Atlanta to its 2017-2018 season dancers, Atlanta Ballet has organized OFFStage Party at Whitespace, where attendees will also get to explore the exhibition Ancient Art Objects, featuring nine artists exploring themes of time, excavation and antiquity. Fernbank Museum of Natural History’s next 21 next Fernbank After Dark event, Ecology + Mixology, will focus on how local brewers work to conserve the environment while brewing our favorite beers. Local brewing companies at the event will include Terrapin Beer Co., Urban Tree Cidery and SweetWater Brewing Company. Before heading over to Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival’s screening of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, check out the Harry Potter Pop-Up at Edgar’s Proof and Provision. A one-night-only event, the Harry Potter-themed pop-up will feature unique and magical cocktails by head mixologist James Wampler and light wizard bites. In her new book, Policing the Black Man, Angela J. Davis explores how racism in the criminal justice system impacts the lives of African-American boys and men in the United States. To hear Davis speak more about her research, the Atlanta History Center has organized Author Program: Angela J. Davis. Davis is a graduate of Harvard Law School and a professor of law at the American University’s Washington College of Law. She will be reading and taking questions from her book. In the latest collection of stories edited by Tayari Jones, she writes, “Atlanta is a city sewn from the ashes and everything that grows here is at once fertilized and corrupted by the past.” In the collection, Atlanta Noir, the artists explore this side of Atlanta and what the city’s history means. To celebrate the collection’s release, Charis Books and More has organized Atlanta Noir Book Party, where four of the featured authors will read and discuss their respective stories in the collection.
