In her debut collection of short stories, Boondock Kollage: Stories from the Hip Hop South, Regina N. Bradley uses historical and hip-hop infused fiction to explore issues of race, belonging and identity in the post-Civil Rights American South. Bradley assistant professor of African American Literature at Armstrong State University and an alumna Nasir Jones Hiphop Fellow at Harvard University will visit Charis Books & More on Wed., June 14, to read from and discuss Boondock Kollage. $5 Suggested donation. 7:30 p.m., Wed., June 14. When Rihanna’s debut single “Pon De Replay” dropped in 2005, the Barbadian singer was only 17. Since 2005, the singer has released eight albums and more than a decade’s worth of anthems to dance to. On Sat., June 10, Jungle Atlanta hosts ICON: A celebration of Rihanna. A monthly event curated by Barry Brandon and For All Humans, ICON celebrates recording artists and their music through burlesque and drag performances, live vocalists, aerial and trapeze acts, and other performances. Dedicated to the blues singer Howlin’ Wolf, Wolf Fest returns to Northside Tavern for its 13th year of celebrating the legend’s songs and career. Wolf Fest began in 2001, when the Atlanta blues band the Breeze Kings put their love for Wolf to the test, covering Northside Tavern’s walls with pictures of the singer and playing nothing but Wolf songs well into the night. Wolf Fest 2017 will feature performances by Atlanta blues performers, including Ross Pead, Frankie’s Blues Mission, the Cazanovas, the Vipers, Larry Griffith, Dry White Toast, Funky Bluester and, of course, the Breeze Kings. The Southern Center for Human Rights’ (SCHR) 2017 Justice Salon Series will open with a screening of Ava DuVernay’s award-winning documentary, 13th. The Netflix original documentary uses the 13th amendment to explore how racism in the criminal justice system has undergirded the mass incarceration of African-Americans in the United States. To launch its monthly series Fernbank After Dark, Fernbank Museum of Natural History is hosting A Summer Kickoff Party on Fri., June 9.
