Mouthful - French toast

MURPHY’S: It’s no surprise this notoriously packed Virginia-Highland restaurant offers good french toast on the breakfast and brunch menu.  Each medium-sized slice of challah bread is coated in a cinnamon-laced mixture that is just eggy enough and finished with a blanket of powdered sugar. Don’t forget an order of the sweet and sour fruit compote (75 cents extra); it contrasts beautifully against the melting butter and sugary syrup that’s more Mrs. Butterworth than bona fide Vermont Maple. 997 Virginia Ave. 404-872-0904. www.murphysvh.com.

JAVA JIVE COFFEE HOUSE AND CAFÉ: Atlanta hipsters, literati and breakfast fiends can’t get enough of this saucy blue-painted dive. While the biscuits get all the praise, the french toast will take you back to Sunday morning family breakfasts with the funny papers. The café’s french toast is made with challah and is crisped on the outside and custardy in the middle. But those suffering from last night’s bender should look no further than the PB&J Goes to France, a crazy peanut butter and jelly filled gut-bomb turned breakfast creation. 790 Ponce de Leon Ave. 404-876-6161.

SUN IN MY BELLY: This Decatur breakfast and lunch spot doesn’t get as much love as it deserves. Servers range from chipper to seemingly stoned, but the quaint digs and mouth-watering menu make the weird service secondary. The french toast is made with challah (sensing a trend here?) that’s not always as moist as it could be. But you’d never know the difference after you drench it in syrup and dig into the soft bread filled with honeyed ricotta and a generous helping of mixed fresh berries. They make a mean cappuccino, too. 2161 College Ave. 404-370-1088. www.suninmybelly.com.
