Mouthful - Doughnuts

Smaller shops are worth a visit

We’re a doughnut-obsessed nation. National Donut Day is the first Friday of June, there are numerous websites devoted to the treat, and the South’s resident food expert, John T. Edge, wrote a book titled Donuts: An American Passion. Atlanta has no shortage of delicious doughnut chains, but these small-scale doughnut makers are worth a visit the next time you fall victim to an illicit Homer Simpsonesque donut lust.

Henri’s Bakery: This little bakery has prospered since 1929 by offering a wide-ranging assortment of sweets and lunch items. The homemade yeast doughnuts are made daily with the namesake’s original recipe. A thick sugary glaze plays nicely against the yeasty interior of the glazed donut. The variation with a sticky layer of chocolate fondant frosting is just as good. 61 Irby Ave. 404-237-0202. www.henrisbakery.com.

Happy Donuts: Set off a side street in East Atlanta, this store serves up a large variety of fresh doughnuts, homemade fried pies, and chicken wings. The eggy French crullers, crumbly toasted-coconut-cake doughnuts and the “happy donut” (a cream-filled doughnut crowned with a layer of chocolate frosting) draw commuters in the morning and rambunctious pub crawlers late at night. The drive-thru is open 24 hours a day. 380 Flat Shoals Ave. 404-893-0088.

Duck’s Cosmic Kitchen: Ann Duckworth’s baked (yes, baked!) cinnamon doughnuts quickly gained legendary status among doughnut lovers when the Decatur eatery opened three years ago. The dense beauties (available in regular and mini sizes) resemble a traditional cake donut, but the thick layer of crunchy sugar crystals and aromatic cinnamon sets them apart. 111 New St., Decatur. 404-371-8823. www.duckscosmickitchen.com.
