Mouthful - Deftly made sandwiches

111 MLK

Looking for a lunch spot downtown? The friendly folks here offer New York-style sandwiches with some spot-on twists. Hone in on the Hudge Pudge pork, a glorious concoction of in-house roasted pork with surprisingly not-too-strong Muenster cheese and kraut on grilled pumpernickel. Try the Turkey Timothy with cranberry relish as a primer to Thanksgiving. 111 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, 404-523-0109.

Nantucket Sandwich Shop

Located in a part of Alpharetta that actually feels like a small, convivial town, Nantucket Sandwich Shop looks as if it’s been plucked straight out of New England. The Nantucket grilled chicken sandwich has a creamy, satisfying smash of buttery avocado, a slather of ranch dressing and a precise slice of Swiss cheese. The tuna melt, with a hint of sweet relish, is addiction-worthy. 9 S. Main St., Alpharetta. 678-867-9357.

The New Yorker Marketplace and Delicatessen

Wow, the menu is dauntingly lengthy here. But it’s hard to go wrong, so let your cravings lead you. The Dagwood-esque Reuben is a scrumptious jaw workout. Blue cheese and horseradish mayo lend the Long Island steak sandwich gourmet cred. Parking can be a challenge, but you’ll be grateful for the walk back to your car after you down the huge portions. 322 Pharr Road, 404-240-0260.

Sun in My Belly

Occupying an old hardware store, the cafe is a striking combination of vintage, rustic and modern styles combined into a sensual, comfortable space that complements Alison Lueker’s outstanding food. Although it bears little resemblance to a Cuban sandwich, Sun in My Belly’s version has crusty pressed brioche, melted Swiss and velvety ham with a piquant kiss of Dijon mustard. 2161 College Ave., 404-370-1088. www.suninmybelly.com.
