The Grocery Store Formerly Known as Murder Kroger will shut its doors on Oct. 28 and bite the dust shortly thereafter to make way for 725 Ponce, a mixed-use project that will abut the Atlanta Beltline Eastside Trail.

New City, a development firm headed by Jamestown alum Jim Irwin, plans to build an 60,000 square-foot “Kroger prototype” underneath a 360,000 square-foot office tower.

The store will be “immediately adjacent” to the ever-crowded trail and connect to the path via a dedicated entrance. In additional to the usual features, the offices above — Beltline officials and real-estate pros have said that there is high demand for office space along the Eastside Trail — will feature multiple outdoor terraces.

The developer has also partnered with the Ford Factory Lofts owner to create connections between that development and the Beltline and retail spaces.

New City expects to immediately begin work after the dust has cleared. It wants to complete the office tower and Beltline connection in late 2018, the company says in a statement. The new Kroger, which was recently christened “Beltline Kroger,” is expected to open in early 2019.
