A Change.org petition wants Mayor Kasim Reed to halt the proposed tearing down of the Engineer’s Bookstore near Georgia Tech’s campus. Built nearly 85 years ago, the building is “a ‘contributing building’ within the Means Street National Register Historic District,” according to the petition was approaching 2,500 signatures at press time. The new owner has plans to build a gas station on the site and already has applied for a liquor license. “Losing this building would be a step backward for our community and another critical loss for our city,” the petition reads.
Lyin’ Ryan Lochte, the U.S. Olympic swimmer who fabricated a story about being robbed at gunpoint in Rio to cover up for his own transgressions, has lost four major sponsors since the truth came out. Speedo is joined by Ralph Lauren, Syneron-Candela (parent company of Gentle Hair Removal), and airweave mattress company in dropping Lochte. “While we have enjoyed a winning relationship with Ryan for over a decade and he has been an important member of the Speedo team, we cannot condone the behavior that is counter to the values this brand has long stood for,” a statement issued by Speedo USA read.
Those renovations to Philips Arena may soon be underway. The Atlanta Dream have announced that the WNBA team will be balling at Georgia Tech’s McCammish Pavilion for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. The press release issued only states that Philips “will not be available” during that time. The Hawks have been in talks with the City of Atlanta to rehab the arena.
